Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein

Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock is at the Inglis Sale in Australia, where earlier this week he bought a filly by the Dubawi stallion Too Darn Hot out of Entisaar, who won the G1 Allan Robertson Memorial for the stable in 2015 an was Equus Champion Two-Year-Old.

Mike sent us voice notes for his runners at Turffontein on Saturday, where nine races will be staged on the inside track. The stable sent out a few winners this week and more good results are expected going into the last few weeks of the Autumn Feature Season.

Mike said: “We have three fillies entered. They’re all in a good space, running in races that look difficult to win but not out of it. They should all be considered.”

Bold Act was expected to finish in the places when she returned from a rest in a 1400m race, mid-March, but she faded out of contention over the last 1000m. She’s in a 1000m sprint this time, for the first time in her career, but having won over 1160m as a two-year-old, this speed-laden dash could be what she needs to bounce back to winning ways.

Mike said: “This is possibly too sharp for Bold Act but we’re trying to get her back to top form. She hit the front last time, the feeling was that it was just too far. I reckon she has good place prospects in this race.”
Next up, Tayooba in Race 8 over 1000m, the distance of her easy Maiden win. Mike commented: “I think Tayooba is a decent sort of filly. She was poorly ridden when she ran unplaced last time, it left me scratching my head. If given a chance to get into stride, she should be in the money.”

Beaded Gown has been running consistently well in low-rated handicaps and with a further drop in her rating she is likely to be competitive in Race 9 over 1000m. “Beaded Gown is quite honest. She’ll need a bit of luck from her outside draw, but I like the fact that she’s going around the turn again in this race, it suits her. I think she has a chance of contesting the finish, include her in your perms.”

Favourite backers have a chance of a good start at Sunday’s Scottsville meeting where Randjesfontein trainer Corne Spies has entered a single runner in Zoombomber, who has already raced in feature company. Corne has fancied Zoombomber a few times to win upcountry, and on the strength of his three eye-catching runs so far, this gelding looks set to dominate Race 1 over 1200m.

Peter Muscutt’s Noble City was considered good enough to join the trainers raiding string for the competitive Cape Summer Season and he acquitted himself beautifully in two starts, winning his debut and then running on for third in a handicap over 1200m. He should enjoy the step up to 1400m in Race 5 and with Richard Fourie retaining the ride, could be one to rely on.

Graded-placed in Cape Town, Muscutt’s sprinter Isivunguvungu is another whose KZN return will be welcomed by his local followers. He has a Cape visitor to contend with in Vaughan Marshall’s speedy runner, Love In Winter and this should be one of the best contests on the card.

Keep an eye on MJ Odendaal’s El Dante in Race 8 over 1600m. He was collared and run out of it very late after setting the clip over 1750m last time and might well be hard to peg back over the easier mile at the Pietermaritzburg track.
