South Africa reaches for gold in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.


Sascoc named a powerful team to represent the rainbow nation at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia between 4 to 15 April.

We definitely ‘shared the dream’ by holding the fifth positon in the medals table with a total of 37 medals – our athletes surely did us proud. Our athletes battled it out across 16 codes, including paralympics sports athletics, lawn bowls, swimming, table tennis and powerlifting.

The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.

Here’s some interesting facts about the event that brings Commonwealth Games:

Where it all began…

The first official Commonwealth Games (called the British Empire Games) were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. It consisted of athletes from 11 countries competing in 59 events across six sports: athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rowing, aquatics (swimming and diving) and wrestling. Interestingly, women only competed in swimming events.

Nations eligible to compete

The multi-sport event is attended by athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, an organisation of around 53 states that were former British Empire territories.

The slogan for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is ‘Share the Dream’ and the mascot is a blue, surfing koala named Borobi.

Reaching for gold

A total of 275 gold medals were up for grabs in 2018 Commonwealth Games.

SA rating all-time tally of medals

South Africa was sixth in the All-time tally of medals, with an overall total of 280 medals (92 Gold, 92 Silver and 96 Bronze).
